The Lord's Prayer as a Blueprint for Fathers
On Father's Day, Tim teaches that the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) is a blueprint for how fathers should lead their homes: setting godly rules and…
From the Mouth of God to the Mind of Man
Brother Doug preaches on Luke 24:25-27, showing that Christ's death on the cross was not a defeat but a necessary, glorious victory: it atoned for sin, fulfilled the ancient prophecies from Moses through Isaiah, and defeated Satan forever. The service opens with joyful congregational worship, including hymns '10,000 Reasons' and 'Great Is Thy Faithfulness,' followed by special music from a church member. The congregation closes by singing 'Above All,' sending the room out with the triumph of Christ lifted high.

[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] day I just feel like something good is about to happen and brother this could be that very [Applause] day and brother this could be that very [Music] day praise the Lord sometimes the pronunciations of words differ from one culture to another last week we were talking about the road to may I say emus and uh in the original Greek at least uh in Strong's Concordance which is 1890 it gave the pronunciation as emus emus and uh I've actually never heard anyone say it that way except at the Russian church and the Russian translators we hear rusi say ma however I did research this online I found about the most I could find is about six different English sources they all say emus and so this being an English service may I suggest that we say it the way that they do in englishspeaking countries um boisey is actually a French word but we don't say Le oraz and we and if you're not from here you might say boy Z but if we're around here we say boisey because we know there's no Z and boy C right and um nobody really knows what the first century pronunciation was you know the uh the tape recorders were made out of stone and wood back then and the Fidelity wasn't that was a joke where's the drum all right that being said let's all stand for the reading of God's word we're going to go to Luke chap 24 again this week we're continuing what we did last week we laid some Foundation last week um although this week we're going to focus on verses 25 26 and 27 but I'm going to read all of verse 13 through 35 for context and because it's wonderful story the word of God Luke 24 starting in verse 13 that very day two of them were going to a village named emus about seven miles from Jerusalem and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened while they were talking and discussing together Jesus himself Drew near and went with them but their eyes were kept from recognizing him and he said to them what is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk and they stood still looking sad then one of them named Copus answered him are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days and he said to them what things and they said to him concerning Jesus of Nazareth a man who was a prophet Mighty inde deed and word before God and all the people and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him but we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel yes and besides all this it is now the third day since these things happened moreover some women of our company amazed us they were at the tomb early in the morning and when they did not find his body they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said but him they did not see and he said to them oh foolish ones and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory and beginning with Moses and all the prophets he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself so they drew near to the Village to which they were going he acted as if he were going farther but they urged him strongly saying stay with us for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent so he went in to stay with them when he was at table with them he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them and their eyes were opened and they recognized him and he vanished from their sight they said to each other did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road while he opened to us the scriptures and they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem and they found the 11 and those who were with them gathered together saying the Lord has risen indeed and has appeared to Simon then they told what had happened on the road and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread let's pray Father in Heaven thank you for this time thank you for this story thank you for this passage thank you for everyone here may we ask that you pierce our stubbornness and our blindness and our deafness and our hard hearts and stiff necks and will you will you pierce the darkness and give us understanding today and bless us that your word like rain comes down that it will bear fruit we ask this in the name of Jesus Amen you may be seated We are continuing and building on and adding to what we did last week and uh this week I'm focusing on just three of these verses 2 5 26 and 27 you might want to look at those and the outline for this morning is given by those three verses the first part is given by verse 25 the second part verse 26 the third part verse 27 so we're getting our outline from the scripture itself in verse 25 we have a we have a a backdrop of some Walkers to EMAs who actually are full of sadness and confusion and disbelief and uh what this is this represents us and the mind of man the human mind who doesn't see the things of God necessarily we kind of see the way things look you know life is good but death is bad and it looks like Jesus just died he lost the devil won that means we lost Victory is good defeat is bad this looks pretty hopeless this is how humans think then this is the man of of the mind of man then in verse 26 it's the first time that Jesus speaks other than asking what are you guys talking about what kind of things are you talking about he finally speaks and he in verse 26 he says so in so many words the death of Jesus was supposed to happen it was necessary it was a good thing and uh it was necessary for him to to suffer these things to enter into his glory his glory is a good thing then in uh verse 27 he does what we should be doing every week here and in every church and that is beginning with Moses and all the prophets he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself notice that he still hasn't shown his face to them he they have been prevented from recognizing who he is and this actually shows that he wants us to believe without seeing like Thomas in John 20 Thomas said I won't believe in unless I see the the holes in his hands and at his side unless I touch you know and Jesus says what you know the story so oh you believe because you've seen But blessed are those who haven't seen and yet believe he wants us to believe from the scriptures before he shows his face we know that one day every tongue will confess that he is God every knee will bow before him but we know that his greatest blessing is for those of us who believe before we see him who believe now based on the scriptures and so verse 27 I'm calling Jesus calls us to the greatest blessing and that is to believe based on the scriptures so the title of this message today is from the mouth of God to the mind of man the to EMAs part two all right let's look at verse 25 this is Jesus's call to rise to understanding he says oh foolish ones and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken you see we all have the corruption of sin and that comes in some different forms in Matthew 13 I'm just going to go there for a second Matthew 13 13-15 He says seeing do they do not see and hearing they do not hear nor do they understand in indeed in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says you will indeed hear but never understand and you will indeed see but never perceive for this people's heart has grown dull and with their ears they can barely hear and their eyes they have closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn and I would heal them so by the way Copus and His companion that is US whenever we're reading through the Bible and often we're called to humility we say these people they knew Jesus personally they had seen him feed 5,000 and raise the dead and the lame walk and the blind see and the deaf hear and yet they're not believing what's going going on I think this is us lots of times we hear an example we have to Humble ourselves say are we like that and I think yes the answer is yes we are that is us you know we look at Peter at the at the time where Jesus was arrested where Peter actually denied that he knew Jesus three times and we can look at that and we can judge Peter we can say what a jerk he shouldn't have denied that he knew Jesus I I wouldn't do that yes we would do that we have to know that that we deny that we know him three times every day we have opportunities to witness to others and we we chicken out we deny that we know Jesus so this is talking about us and he's calling us to faith in this way and our ignorance and our foolishness Proverbs 1:7 says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge but the fool despises wisdom and instruction so our learning disability is part of the corruption of sin it's called other things in Exodus 32 3334 the Lord says it over and over he calls his people you stiff necked people so we're stiff necked we're Heart of Heart uh we're blind we're deaf some people people are hard of hearing some people are hard of listening right but that's part of the corruption of sin all right so in the next verse in verse 26 see they're acting as though this was a senseless tragedy that Jesus he didn't really have to die it wasn't necessary he was doing good he wasn't bad he didn't sin he didn't have to die but Jesus says was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things that's a way of saying without asking a question that's the way of saying it was necessary Christ needed to die it was ordained that he would die and I have three points on this verse of why it was necessary one is the death is necessary to atone for sin remember back in the Garden of Eden uh Genesis 216 And1 17 the Lord says you may eat from any tree but from the Tree of the knowledge of the good and evil you shall not eat otherwise you know the answer you shall surely die death is required for Disobedience to God that's the only only thing can make up for it and in Romans 6:23 it says the wages of sin is death um you know if we want to let's go to um Isaiah 53 for just a minute and we can see in this why the crucifixion was necessary and by the way we aren't to the resurrection yet they still haven't figured out that Jesus has risen from the dead even though they've been told that even though it was proph side in scripture uh he's still saying it was necessary that the Christ might must suffer in Isaiah 53 verse 4 and 5 we could read six also verse four surely he that's Jesus has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows see it was necessary for him to Bear our pain yet we esteemed him stricken Smitten by God and Afflicted isn't that what clus and His companion did they thought Jesus was the one that that lost verse 5 53:5 but he was pierced for our transgressions he was crushed for our iniquities upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace and with his wounds we are healed one more verse all we like sheep have gone astray we have turned everyone to his own way and the lord has laid LA on him the iniquity of us all so you see it was necessary for him to die it wasn't a senseless death it wasn't unnecessary in other words it was necessary because it was a good thing it was a it was a perfectly great thing and we're going to see in a second that it also brings him glory also it was necessary to defeat the serpent so remember the serpent seemed to win a little battle in the garden there and in Genesis 3:15 uh the Lord is speaking to the serpent and he says that evees Offspring well you're going to bruise his heel but he's going to give you a head injury so it prophesies the defeat of Satan right there and that was necessary to defeat sat and so it looks like the devil won to a human mind but in reality Satan Was Defeated he was thrown down thrown down into the pit by the death of Jesus we can uh we can see that um in Hebrews 2:14 if you please I'm going to go there I'll give you a second to find it if you want to find it you know my tendency is to just go to 20 different verses so fast you can hardly just turn the pages that fast and um but here in uh Hebrews 2 verse4 it says through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death that is the devil he might destroy the one who has the power of death that is the devil so through Christ's death he destroys the work of the devil and if we go to Revelation 12 now I do recommend that you actually go here this is big big stuff because what we're talking about is rather than just a a thing that looks like it looks to us right now we're talking about an eternal plan of God something that's huge and here in Revelation 12: 7-1 now I'm going to read this whole passage here um and it tells the big picture the whole story Satan thrown down to earth now War arose in heaven Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon and the dragon and his angels fought back but he was defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven and the Great Dragon was thrown down that ancient serpent who is called the devil and Satan the deceiver of the whole world he was thrown down to the Earth and his angels were thrown down with him and I heard a loud voice in heaven saying now the salvation and the power in the Kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down who accuses them Day and Night Before Our God and they have conquered him by the blood of the lamb and by the word of their testimony for they loved not their lives even unto death therefore Rejoice oh heavens and you who dwell in them right so this is not a defeat this is Victory this is Victory last week we did the song uh Victory in Jesus that's what it's talking about Jesus's death was Victory Satan Was Defeated so he's saying in verse 26 was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory and uh for a little taste of of his Glory let's go to John 12 John 12 and by the way here's a another time where in John 12 he he prophesied that this was going to happen he says truly truly I say to you this is John 12:24 unless a grain of wheat falls into the Earth and dies it remains alone but if it dies it Bears much fruit see it's necessary for a seed to die in the ground in order for it to sprout New Life um we're still in John 12 let's talk about God's glory for a minute starting in verse 27 the son of man must be lifted up notice that must be lifted up he says now is my soul troubled and what shall I say father save me from this hour but for this purpose I have come to this hour father glorify your name then a voice Came From Heaven I have glorified it and I will glorify it again the crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered others said an Ang Angel has spoken to him Jesus answered this voice has come for your sake not mine now is the Judgment of this world now will the ruler of this world be cast out that's the devil the ruler of this world and I when I am lifted up from the earth will draw all people to myself he said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die so the crowd answered him we have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever how can you say that the son of man must be lifted up who is this son of man so Jesus said to them the light is among you for a little while longer walk while you have the light lest Darkness overtake you the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going while you have the light believe in the light that you may become Sons of light so this is Jesus prophesying his death and he says in John 8 in a little while you won't be able to find me anymore and then another little while and you will there's another time it was right after Peter confessed that he was the Christ where Jesus told him back in um Matthew 16 let me just flip back here Matthew 16:21 from that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him now here's the the mind of man again rebuke him saying far be it from you Lord this shall never happen to you but Jesus turned and said to Peter get behind me Satan you are a hindrance to me and here's the punchline for you are not setting your mind on the things of God but on the things of man so we're back to our big idea this week is we have the mind of God and the mind of man the mouth of God speaks to the mind of man okay and in in John 175 Jesus is praying and says glorify me now with the glory that I had with you before the world began so see this was an eternal plan for Christ's Glory all right was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into into his glory now here's our call to us Jesus calls us to the greatest blessing which is that we believe without seeing his face you know Christ is here right now we don't see his face right now just like the Walkers to the road on the road to Aus but he calls us to to believe without seeing and beginning with Moses and all the prophets he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself what scriptures might that have been it might have been what we were just talking about Genesis 2 Genesis 3 and the fact that a death was required notice that Abel must have understood this that a death was required for sin because Abel sacrificed animals for the Lord and Abel's worship was well regarded by God Noah After the flood subsided Noah sacrificed animals Abraham was called to sacrifice his old his own son isn't that interesting his only begotten son he was asked to give just like God gave His only begotten son and what happened there was a lamb in the thicket that died in his place just as Jesus dies in our place and Abraham thought that he was going to lose Isaac but he received Isaac back that's like a little bit like a resurrection and it says that in Hebrews 11 we'll talk about this one day and we have the story of The Exodus the Passover the tab tacle it's all a story the sacrificial system is all the story of atoning for our sins they're all pointing forward to the great high priest Jesus the Christ who will give his own life for ours and it looked like a defeat but it was the salvation of mankind um going forward I'm going to do more sermons on this he could we could do a whole sermon on Psalm 22 it's a prophecy uh of of this crucifixion and Isaiah 53 which we just touched on today but there you have it verses 25- 27 and uh it's time to move on right now I hope to talk more about this in the near future let's bow our heads and pray thank you Lord for these words from the mouth of God to the mind of man that uh Jesus's death was necessary may this all sink in for us and may we understand that this was to your glory and it was not a defeat oh Lord thank you amen Alto together now we're going to be seened above all powers [Music] above all power above all Kings above all
