Be Faithful Unto Death: The Church of Smyrna
Pastor Henry continues his series in Revelation with the persecuted church of Smyrna, one of only two churches Christ does not rebuke. He teaches that just as myrrh must be crushed to release its fragrance, God allows believers to be crushed so they bear good fruit, and points to the martyr Polycarp as a model of being faithful unto death. The call is to stay faithful in small things now so that strength is there when bigger trials come, because to share Christ’s suffering is to share his glory. The morning opens with two beloved hymns and closes on a tender invitation song.
