The Virgin Birth: Foundation of the Gospel

e praise God brothers and sisters I'd like to read from John chapter 1 verse1 14 the word became flesh and made his dwelling among us we have seen his glory the glory of the one and only son who came from the father full of grace and truth this verse emphasizes the miracle of God coming down onto the Earth and making uh his dwelling Among Us you know if if we didn't have Jesus Christ what kind of hope would we have honestly have you really thought about how would your life look today if Jesus Christ didn't come down to the Earth how much more different would it look you know but praise God he did come down to this earth he saved us and gave us eternal life through his only begotten son so that being said let's stand up and let's pray for this service Lord God we thank you for this service you've given us today Lord we ask you God bless this place Lord fill it with the Holy Spirit God we ask you to bless the singing bless the preaching Lord we ask you God speak to us today through your word Lord help us to understand what is being said to us Lord and so we can remember it God so we didn't leave empty-handed God but so we can be filled with the joy and and your glory Lord God of this three person bless Trinity praise God my dear friends uh we're going to have uh brother Doug share his message this morning but before he does I'd like us to open up to Psalms 40 chapter 16 and then or passage 16 let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you let such a love of your salvation say continually the Lord be magnified again let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you you know the Bible teaches us how to seek the Lord and today we'll be hearing a lesson from Brother Doug that he prepared and may we open up our hearts and our minds to to what the holy spirit is going to tell us today Amen brother Doug hello good morning you know I was in the wedding business most of my adult life and this Sanctuary this congregation it reminds me of a of a story I'm just going to tell you a wedding story just about anybody who's been in the wedding business has stories of sometimes when things went wrong you know and they make good stories later anyway this bride and groom interviewed me and they hired me and the last thing the bride said before she left was you know this family doesn't get along the his family doesn't get along with my family and I said okay well you have heard of that that scenario before and she said well you'll see well then I forgot about it completely but when I got there I saw that it was worse than I thought it was like there was a war between these two families and uh and at one point this now I was the photographer I was the wedding photographer and this uh lady comes up to me and she says she says she's poking me in the chest with her finger and she's saying your job is to keep them away from me and I said you know I'm just the phographer but I I had uh you know this Challenge and then at one point they're like yelling at each other and the groom finally says can't we all get along for just one day you know and then they all kind of shut up but for the wedding one side of the family set over here the other side sat over here and I think of that every time I see this church service I see this empty place in the middle and it reminds me of that wedding I had to do photographs with this big gap in the Middle where they wouldn't even sit close to each other well now I don't think that that's going going on where these people over here don't like these people over here but how long have we been doing this service didn't we start in January or February of last something like that this year and uh we're almost coming up on a year and uh but I still see this and I see that it's actually a sign and everybody look over here and I want you to look at the empty seats look out here and you see these empty seats those empty seats represent something they represent the people that don't go to this service they represent the people that God has not put in our service yet and we' like to think that God puts people right where it's the best place for them to be and for some reason all these people God has chosen to put them somewhere else this morning and so I think we have an obligation to listen and look and so I'm going to talk for a minute why are we here that's a question usually when people say why are we here they're really saying we shouldn't be here or we should be somewhere else but maybe it's an honest question we have to look at to what what purpose to what end are we here what's the goal of our church service right and uh I think that God's purpose for us as humans of our the purpose of Our Lives is the same reason why we are here I'm going to read just for a second from the westmin Westminster Shorter Catechism now if you don't know what this is there was an assembly in the middle of the 1600s um it was during the church split between uh the Puritans and the anglicans and there was an assembly in England called the Westminster assembly and a catechism is a way of teaching using questions and answers and so what have is the first three questions and answers of the Westminster Shorter Catechism talks about why we're here first question what is the chief end of man answer man's Chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever that's our purpose in life to glorify God God and enjoy him forever that's also the reason we're here this morning now question two what rule has God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him here's the answer the word of God which is contained in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments is the Only Rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him okay the Bible question number three what do the scriptures principally teach here's the answer it's two things the scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God to what Duty God requires of us so what we are to believe and what God requires of us what to believe what to do very simple that is why we're here is to to glorify God and to understand what we are supposed to believe and do so let us open our Bibles to Matthew Chapter 2 and while we're going there be reminded that this is God's holy word and it is authored by the Holy Spirit and as such it has no mistakes of any kind and it is absolutely authoritative over every part of our lives with for everything we are to believe and do interesting side note before I start is I was talking to Henry this morning he is preaching later at the 11:00 and one of the things he's going to talk about some of the names of Jesus um wonderful counselor wonderful and counselor and uh In this passage in Matthew did I say chapter 2 I meant chapter one um verse starting in verse 18 we have three of the names of Jesus we have what we say all the time we say Jesus Christ that's actually two names that's not his first name and his last name Christ is the Greek Christos which came into the Latin as Christ which we say Christ that means the Messiah right uh that comes from the Hebrew Messiah and we have Jesus and we also have the name Emanuel we heard the hymn earlier just a little bit ago Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel or are we doing that one later I heard you guys practicing It Anyway OK Come O Come Emanuel there is uh a verse in Isaiah chapter 7 uh 14 where it it says one of his names is Emmanuel which means god with us and that is is actually the key verse so look at your Bible and look at Matthew 1 verse 18-25 and we have eight verses here and the verses can be divided in into four easy sections the first two verses there 18 and 19 we have the framework for the Virgin birth how was it that Jesus was born holy right perfect in love and Purity perfectly pure without the corruption of sin and it was because he was born by the Holy Spirit without the human father his father is the holy spirit but the framework for that the the engagement of Joseph and Mary is is verses 18 and 19 then in verse 20 and 21 we have where Joseph was confused about what to do when he found out that his fiance was pregnant and he has an angel of the Lord visit him in a dream now this is one of four times that Joseph is visited by an Angel in dreams but in this passage today we're going to get this one time the angel straightens him out and tells him what's going to happen then our third section is verse 22 and 23 where the Apostle Matthew is now telling us now he was sent by Jesus he's telling why this is um and uh that is to fulfill this Old Testament Prophecy from Isaiah then our last section 24 and 25 we have Joseph's Obed obedience let us stand for the reading of God's word and I'm going to read this the conception and birth of Jesus now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows when his mother Mary Had had been betrothed to Joseph before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit and Joseph her husband being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her planned to send her away secretly but when he considered this behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying Joseph son of David do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife for the child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit she will bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus for he will save his people from their sins now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet behold the Virgin shall be with child and shall bear a son and they shall call his name Emmanuel which translated means god with us and Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took Mary as his wife but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a son and he called his name Jesus let's pray Father in Heaven thank you for this passage father will you speak to our hearts and will you pierce our hearts and will you pierce our our minds and show us exactly what you want us to learn today what to believe and and know what to do we ask this in the name of Jesus Amen you may be seated so the big idea that's the takeaway I was pondering this week when I was pondering the question of why we're here I'm thinking what what stays permanent what sticks do you know the dirty little secret is that the preacher the teacher learns more than the student does the preacher has his nose in the soil of the passage all week and then the congregation gets some of it and by tomorrow they only remember 5% of it and a month from now 1% a year from now who knows what they get and so I'm thinking what can I plant what seed can I plant that will stick and uh here's what it is this is the takeaway this is the big idea the basic gospel the good news for us is contained in the Virgin birth and that's in here this passage has the basic gospel the reason we should believe and the basic thing we should believe is right here now I also have a secondary motivation here and that I believe that God will bless this church and fill this room if we preach the gospel from the word of God that he will bless and put he will bless us and put people here all right so the first part is in verse 18 we're going to go through this now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows when his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph stop right there after their betro betrothed by the way everybody know what that word means it means engaged it's synonym betroth comes into English I want to know what that word is in Russian engaged betroth what he said what he said know yeah official with a ceremony and a party right and it happens in history with a ceremony and also without a ceremony and uh uh betral comes from Middle English and engagement comes from French Eng engage but none of that matters what we have is that there is a framework when when you get married first the decision is made the uh first you could say the first vow is taken the promise the pledge and the consent is given and that's the engagement now that's not the beginning what's the beginning in this case we know that way back in in Isaiah chapter 7 already the Lord is saying Behold a virgin will conceive and will bear a son and this is going to be his name see it's already determined by God and and how how long ago does that go it goes at least to Genesis 2 or Genesis yeah Genesis 3 where uh when God pronounces the curse he says to uh to Eve that her seed will no no he's actually speaking to the serpent I'm sorry I just got that backwards he speaks to the serpent that the seed of Eve will crush your head and you're going to nip his heel but he's going to crush your head and that's the only time by the way every time you hear the word seed or descendants in the Bible every single time it's the seed of a man and here Eve it's the seed of a woman and see this is a prophecy of the Virgin birth that Jesus was born seed of a woman and by the Holy Spirit right so so yes the engagement is our being instruments in God's will but your marital partners are chosen by God sometimes the betrothal happens when they're children I looked at this could it be that Mary and Joseph were chosen when they were children it happens it does not say here but it does happen um and there's a principle by the way it's a side principle but this is a principle is if it doesn't say we shouldn't be making all kinds of guesses and all kinds of pro proclamations about it is this way uh Matthew Henry said we should not covet to know more than what the Bible says now I think because it says when his mother had been betrothed she was found to be with child by the holy spirit so I think it's pretty immediate but since we don't know we don't know but the we are instruments in God's will there and that's true um for a lot more things and we also know by the way that Isaiah 7 is not the only uh prophecy of Jesus we know that in John 17 Jesus says glorify me with the glory that I had with you before the world began so the story of Jesus's birth Jesus already existed before the world did begin and so this is really Eternal truth it goes clear back and then Mary Mary and Joseph being engaged is the start of our instrumental following of God's plan and then of course there's the actual marriage which comes later now some would say that uh what we do in modern times is we take our ideas of marriage as not being an eternal thing we take it from civil government as though it's the government that gives us the marriage license and we're not it's not a done deal until that document is signed but what they're saying here is that it was a done deal before they were ever engaged and even once they're engaged it's a much more serious thing than we view it here in the in America um it's interesting in verse 19 it says it says they had been betrothed and Joseph her husband so they're already calling him the husband and as a matter of fact she had the child while they were still engaged so there was no Scandal on that uh but because when you're engaged it required a divorce to break up once you're engaged it's done deal and uh by the way I think things should be that way now too that that uh we should recognize that our marital partner was chosen by God and it's a permanent permanent thing but now we also have the story of Mary this is Joseph's side we look at we look at this and we should see right away this is Joseph this is Joseph's side of the story Mary's side of the story is given in Luke chapter 1 and we're going to go there in just a minute to Luke chapter 1 and how do they fit together here's how they fit together when his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph now we go to Luke and everything that happened to Mary happened in the middle of this sentence and then the rest of that sentence is after all that stuff so let's go to Luke chapter 1 and I'm going to read the story from Mary's point View and this is going to seem a little long and I have to confess I worried about reading this whole passage because I thought you know what they're going to be bored with so much reading and I realized I'm compromising the gospel because I'm worried about how bored you're going to be with it that's talking about that Corruption of sin that we all inherit that makes us not want to hear a lot of reading of the Bible but this is I timed it it's 4 minutes long that's if I don't stop and talk about it but I will so Luke chapter 1 we're going to start in verse 26 first thing it says now in the sixth month what it's talking about is Mary's relative Elizabeth was pregnant and she was in her sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph of the descendants of David and the virgin's name was Mary and coming in he said to her greetings favored one the Lord is with you but she was very perplexed at this statement and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was the angel said to Hero not be afraid man Mary for you have found favor with God and behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son and you shall name him Jesus he will be great and will be called the son of the most high there's another thing that Jesus is called and the Lord God will give him the Throne of his father David Son of David is another one of his names and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever and his kingdom will have no end Mary said to the angel how can this be since I'm a virgin the angel answered and said to her the holy spirit will come upon you and the power of the most high will overshadow you and for that reason the holy child shall be called The Son of God the Son of God is another one of those names and behold even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age and she who was called baren is now in her sixth month for nothing will be impossible with God and actually so what we see what we if we would have started sooner in in uh Luke we'd see this pattern of miraculous births in the Bible it when when you read the story of Elizabeth and Zechariah you're reminded doesn't that sound familiar somebody that was too old to conceive and they were Barren they were unable to have children who does that sound like Abraham and Sarah same thing and God caused Sarah to Bear a child Supernatural it's a supernatural act it doesn't happen someone that's Barren and uh 90 years old doesn't give birth Sarah was 90 years old when she gave birth so then who else do we have Rachel and Leia had problems conceiving right also Hannah the mother of Samuel one of the the first of the Major Prophets the first one in our in our Bible Samuel his mother was also Barren and then Elizabeth was Barren and then look we're going to have another miraculous conception and we say that this is similar to uh in Genesis 2 God formed the man out of dust in the ground and he breathed life into him similarly the Holy Spirit breathed life caused a life to happen in Sarah in Rachel in Hannah in Elizabeth and now in Mary all right so even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age and she who was called Baron is now in her sixth month for nothing will be impossible with God verse 38 and Mary said behold the bondslave of the Lord may it be done to me according to your word and the angel departed from her so here you have the consent Mary is giving her consent even though the angel is not given her a lot of choices he's saying you will conceive you will do this this is what's going to happen and she says I'm your I'm slave of the Lord let it be according to that so in the engagement consent is given to a marriage and then this Angel explains what's going to happen to to Mary this is going to be true in Joseph Joseph's Angelic visitation as well we see something that we see in the book of philimon where Paul says by my authority I can just command and you but out of love I'm going to persuade you I'm going to explain to you this is what happens the angel of the Lord has enough authority to not give you any choices and say you are doing this but out of love he explains what's going to happen to her and she does consent same thing happens when the angel visits Joseph he can just command and he does command surely he does but out of love he persuades and and that's something for us too the angel departed from her now verse 39 she's already pregnant at this time Mary arose and went in a hurry to the Hill Country to a city in Judah and entered the house of Zechariah or Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth when Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting the baby leaped in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she cried out with a loud voice and said blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb and how has it happened to me that the mother of my Lord would come to me for behold when the sound of your greeting reached my ears the baby leaped in my womb for joy and blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord so by the way the baby in the womb in case you don't know that was John the Baptist but see the Incarnation of Jesus the John chapter 1 who read John chapter 1 who read John chapter 1 um 14 there you are uh and and the word dwell the the word became flesh and dwelt Among Us sorry I blanked for a second on that when the word became flesh when when G when Mary was pregnant that's when the word became flesh and we should think of that it's not the birth but it's when she conceived and notice that she's conceived and even the other baby in the womb knows that Jesus is there that's the beginning right there now it's an interesting discussion when you calculate the dates for Christmas that the conception is a different kind of date than the birth and that matters when how we calculate it but that's another sermon for another day then Mary said now here she prophesize verse 46 my soul exalts the Lord and my spirit has rejoiced in God my savior savior there's another name for Jesus for he has had regard for the humble state of his bondslave for behold from this time on all generations will count me blessed for the mighty one there's another name for Jesus the mighty one has done great things for me and holy is his name we could say holy are all of his names and his Mercy is upon generation after generation toward those who fear Him she's quoting Psalm 103 verse 17 right there he has done Mighty Deeds with his arm he has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart he has brought down rulers from their Thrones and has exalted those who were humble he has filled the Hungry with good things and sent away the rich empty-handed he has given help to Israel his servant in remembrance of his Mercy as he spoke to our fathers to Abraham and his descendants forever and Mary stayed with her about three months and then returned to her home all right so Elizabeth started out six months and then she stayed with her three more months it doesn't say here but we can say she probably stayed until she gave birth right this is Mary's part of the story now let's go back to Matthew chapter 1 again and we can finish the rest of that sentence in Matthew 1 18 when his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph all this happened before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit now we don't know when she t told him I would tend to think she would have immediately told him the first that it happened even before she went to visit Elizabeth or after she came back three months later she might have even been showing a little bit it doesn't say so we don't know but in verse 19 we see Joseph her husband he's pretty troubled right here being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her planned to send her away secretly see it was a disgrace it shows how miraculous this was that uh he's going to be married but she's pregnant how does that ever happen except that she's been with another man now he loves her and he trusts her she tells him oh no this is by the Holy Spirit and as much as you want to believe it man you the you know you put yourself in Joe's shoes in Joseph's shoes bottom line it ain't my kid it's not my son um so he had decided to send her away secretly some translations say he had decided to divorce her quietly but he's still thinking about it he's still weighing things out verse 20 when he had considered this behold behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream saying Joseph so here's in the dream and the angel speaks to him by name Joseph and then appeals to him to you know Joseph was actually in line for the throne of David he says Joseph son of David do not be afraid so he was afraid afraid notice every time that there's an angel that appears to anybody tells them don't be afraid that's because they're scared they're frightened do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife for the child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit not some other man some other son of Adam who's full of sin and he's going to put the corruption of s into your child she will bear a son so the Angel's saying this is happening and you shall call his name Jesus for he will save his people from their sins wow okay remember Jesus by the way that is the Greek version of the Hebrew Yeshua which we translate as Joshua which means god saves so the people cannot save themselves but God Saves who saves the Holy Spirit Jesus so Jesus is one of his names and that means God Saves he is God and he will save his people oh it doesn't go into it here but he will save his people by dying for their sin in his place and someone who is the son of Adam cannot do that we can only die for our own sin actually the way God said it in Genesis 2:16 And1 17 we disobey him once we will surely die so we deserve death for one transgression we can die for one of our sins but what happens of course we continue to sin and sin and sin and sin and sin through our whole life how can we atone for all those sins because God who is infinitely holy his death has infinite value and it can atone for all of the sin of the whole world this lamb when it's sacrificed will take away the sins of the whole world because this lamb is perfect and spotless right it's conceived of a virgin it's spotless you see there's a sign there that atones for all the sins of the world right so that is verse 21 is the last thing that the angel says to Joseph and then now we hear the Apostle Matthew who is sent by Jesus this very child who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born by the Virgin Mary called Matthew to be an apostle Matthew says now all this took place this is going to tell us why why are we here today to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet verse 23 this is Isaiah 7:14 behold the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a son and they shall call his name Emmanuel which translated means god with us that's the explanation that we get wow okay so this is kind of the mother of all miracles do you know the whole new testament is full of one Miracle after another miracle after another miracle and and we have the idea that what does a miracle do is it just like a magic trick that the Lord does like here pick a card any card let's do a trick so that we believe that he's amazing is that what it is well that's one little clue that only God has is all powerful only God can create the heavens and the Earth only God can part the Red Sea only God can cause the head of an axe to float on water only God can walk on water only God can raise the dead so yes if we see something that's Supernatural It could only happen by God people don't do that it never happens by humans so a virgin can not conceive boy if you could patent that invention I could make my next million I forgot about the first million gave up on the first million no but a way to conceive without a man wow no it's it's it is actually so impossible this is why Joseph was troubled that's impossible right but the angel of the Lord straightened him out it was prophesied by Isaiah that's a thousand years earlier who can predict the future try predicting the weather for tomorrow look at the weather and here try this look at tomorrow's weather and then notice what it actually is tomorrow it's always different they get close but they don't nail it but only God can prophesy a thousand years before it happens and nail it a virgin shall conceive and shall bear a child and it surely did happen now we also see in this from verse 19 when Joseph is confused we have a little bit of a picture of Joseph who goes from thinking like a human man and being confused and then he goes from there to in his sleep he's awakened and he goes to somebody who understands hands now verse 24 and Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took Mary as his wife but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a son and he called his name Jesus just as the angel said and may it be that we also are transformed as Joseph is a little bit a little slice of understanding that having studied this passage we go from having some confusion to understanding and then we can go to Obedience of God and there we have what we are to believe that Jesus was born of a virgin and by the way this is the oldest Creeds that go back to the beginning of Christianity the apostles Creed it has the line in it we believe in one God maker of heaven and earth right we believe in Jesus Christ who was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary it's right there in the first earliest Creeds of the church this passage right here how did this start what's the foundational Miracle is the conception of Jesus the birth of the Son of God now next time I talk to you guys I'm going to wrap it up here next time I talk to you guys it's going to be the week after next next week is Christmas celebration and I'm going to go on to Matthew Chapter 2 talking about the visit of the Magi they were uh some say the Three Kings or the three whatever wise men and then is actually later it's it's not in the manger this is at a house after Christmas so this is the three gufts that arrived the Christmas gifts that arrived after the party after the original Christmas party was over but Shadows put to flight Rejoice Rejoice uel shall come to thee all Oh Come Thou King of come and open wide our Heavenly [Music] Home make safe the way that leads on high and close the paath to rej Rejoice uel shall come to thee Oh Isel Rejoice Rejoice uel shall come to thee Oh is Israel [Music] amen we heard a very good message this morning and um I like to learn I like to learn and I love history and um I think we we all are reminded once again the birth of Jesus you know how it all happened and it is truly a miracle praise God for that um but we will be ending and um sister Gwen she she sometimes uh comes here she's in the hospital I guess her legs are not working so and uh she got some seizures so she ended up in the hospital also brother Doug's uh leg is still hurting so we'll pray for that uh but does anybody have any needs oh yeah and so next Sunday uh our service we're actually moving into to Saturday at 6:00 p.m. we're going to have our Christmas night um so next Sunday 9:00 a.m. service will be moved to Saturday at 6 p.m. okay let's pray Lord God we thank you we thank you so much God for this wonderful message God that you spoke Lord through brother Doug Lord God May that message Lord God enter into our hearts and may we all understand Lord God what a miracle Lord God what a miracle you did to to save us Lord God that were dying that were perishing Lord God with all our sins God but you came and you saved us from all of them Lord thank you so much and may we and may we be those instruments to reach God to those that are still lost that are still dying in this world not knowing you Lord God may you use us to reach to them Lord God and God may they come here to hear your good word in Jesus name we pray amen Our Father in heaven Hallowed Be Your Name
