The Peace That Outlasts the Storm
This week Pastor Tim and Pastor Gennady continue their series on the fruit of the Spirit with a discussion on peace, taking questions and stories from the congregation. They contrast the world's conditional peace with the lasting peace Jesus gives: calm in the storm, reconciliation with God, and peace with one another, all flowing from abiding in Christ the true vine. Worship includes "As the Deer," "Indescribable," and "Thank You for the Cross," with readings from Psalm 43 and John. It is a warm, conversational morning that invites believers to bear the fruit of peace and become peacemakers.

Praise the Lord, brothers and sisters. To start today's service, I'll be reading from Psalm 28:7. The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart trusted in him and I am help. Therefore, my heart greatly rejoices and with my song I will praise him. God holds us up when we're worn down and covers up covers us when life is hard. And he's both our strength and our shield. And David trusted God before anything changed. And that's when the help came. It came after. And we tend to want it the other way around, you know. But looking back on the times he's carried us, um, gratitude is the only fitting response. So today, this morning, bring what's weighing you and trust in him with it. And let your praise come from a place that knows he's faithful. And with that being said, let's stand up and pray for the service. Lord God, we thank you for this beautiful morning you've given us, Lord. And we pray and we ask for your blessing on the service. God, teach us what you want to teach us today. Lord, touch our hearts. God, guide this service with the Holy Spirit, Lord. Fill our hearts. We thank you for Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins. Lord, in Jesus name we pray. Amen. And for our first song, we'll be singing as the deer pants. [music] As [music] the deer pants for streams of [music and singing] water, so my soul longs after [singing] you. [music] You [singing] alone are my heart's desire [singing] and I long to worship you. You [music] alone [singing] are my strength, my shield. To you [music and singing] alone may my spirit heal. You [music and singing] alone are my heart's desire [music and singing] and I long to worship [music and singing] you. You're [singing] my friend and you are my [singing] brother even [music] though you are a king. I [singing] love you [music] more than any other so much [music] more than [singing] any You [music and singing] alone are my strength, my shield. To you [music and singing] alone may my spirit [singing] yield. You [singing and music] alone are my heart's desire [music and singing] and I long to worship you. I [singing] want [music] you more than gold or silver [singing] only you can satisfy. [music and singing] You [music and singing] alone are the real joy giver and [music] the apple of my eyes. You alone [music and singing] are my strength, my [music] shield. To you alone may my [music and singing] spirit yield. You alone [singing and music] are my heart's desire [singing] and I [music] long to worship you. For a second song we'll be singing indescribable. The highest of heights to the depths of the sea. [singing and music] creations [music] revealing [singing] your majesty. From the [singing] colors of fall to the fragrance [music] of spring, every creature [singing and music] unique in the song that it sings all exclaiming, [music] indescribable, [singing] uncontainable. [music] You place [singing] the stars in the sky and you know them by name. [music] You are [singing] amazing God. All [music] powerful, untameable, aruck. We [music and singing] fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim. You are amazing [singing and music] God who has told [music and singing] every lightning bolt where it should go or seen [singing] heavenly storehouses laden with snow. Who imagine [singing and music] the sun and gives source to it light yet conceals it to bring us the [singing] coolness of nightmable [singing and music] uncontainable. [music and singing] You place the stars in the sky and you know them [singing] by name. You are [music] amazing God. All [music] powerful, untameable, [singing] aruck. We fall [music] to our knees as we [singing] humbly proclaim. You are [music and singing] amazing God, indescribable, uncontainable. You [singing] place the stars in the sky and you know them [music] by name. You are amazing [singing and music] God. Praise God. Praise the Lord, brothers and sisters, for this morning. I'm glad to be back here today in this place to be with you guys, uh, to worship God and to praise him. And I'm going to be doing the Bible reading for this morning. And let's open up to Psalms 43. Uh which for many of you in the Bibles in the pews is going to be page 809. Um Psalms 43. And I'll give you guys a little bit of time to open up to that. And in this psalm, David was in a lot of distress and he felt like he was distanced from God. Uh and he had no connection with him in this moment. and he was asking God uh for help in this time of trouble in his life. And we're going to read this place right now. Psalms 43. It says here, "Vindicate me, oh God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation. Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. For you are the God of my strength. Why do you cast me off? Why do I go mourning because the oppression of the enemy? Oh, send out your light and your truth. Let them lead me. Let them bring me to your holy hill and to your tabernacle. Then I will go to the altar of God. To God my exceeding joy. And on the harp I will praise you, oh God, my God, why are you cast down, oh my soul, and why are you disquited within me, hoping God, for I shall yet praise him, the help of my countenance and my God. Praise God. And now we'll have uh Pastor Tim and Pastor Gennady come up um and lead a topic for us this morning. God bless. Before we lead a topic, we're going to uh pray for Sunday school and also we're going to pray for our uh service for our teaching. So the Sunday school students, please come up. And um I talked to Ruth and she was saying that the Sunday school director that there's going to be summer school for Sunday students. So um I believe starting next week I will have to confirm with her. Uh there will be no Sunday school until uh the first week of September. But before we pray, I wanted to read these two passages in Proverbs. It says, "Open rebuke is better than love carefully concealed. A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb, but to a hungry soul, every bitter thing is sweet." over here it talks about uh Solomon he says that it's better to to accept an open rebuke because if somebody is telling us something that they see in us then it's good for us to know that and to ask God to set us free but uh how sometimes we hear that people will send you to hell with their love and we don't want that in life, right? And sometimes we want those sweet words like the honeycomb. But the the only sweet thing we can have is Jesus Christ. And he will be rebuking us in our life and in our teachings today uh being in Sunday school being like in this um topic we're going to be talking about Jesus will be rebuking us. the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit will be rebuking us, but it's for our good. So, let's open up our hearts and let's stand up and pray that the power of the Holy Spirit opens our hearts and moves in our lives. Lord God, we thank you, Lord, for this time that you have blessed us with, Lord. And we ask, Lord God, the teaching that's going to be taught today, Lord God, may it rebuke us. May it instruct us. May it comfort us. May it teach us, Lord God, how to live a holy and righteous life before you, Lord God. I pray, God, for each person here, Lord. God, those who are watching us online, Lord God, may you open up our hearts, our souls, our minds, and our spirits, Lord, to accept the word that's going to be spoken today, Lord. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. So, we're going to have our meet and greet a few minutes and everybody back to their seats and then we'll start. God bless. I don't know yet. [music] Hallelujah. I love this. Oh my god. Oh, you're going to Uh, it will just be a few minutes. We're just trying to get the slideshow up. Yeah. Yeah, I guess they're downstairs already. Okay. Oh, they do from downstairs. Okay. Um, Yeah. Like how I'm just wondering how is he going to know what slide goes next? Well, I did. I I connected it. I connected it. Did you connect it? I connected to the sanctuary. I usually change it myself. Yeah. So, oh well, he didn't tell me that. Um, okay. [clears throat] Okay, guys. Well, ah, jeez. I guess there was some technical difficulties, but right here, I don't know, Dimma. I mean, sending the slideshow right now. Like usually I just connect to sanctuary and it comes up on the screen but uh I wasn't aware that I had to send it. So today we're going to be talking about the topic of the fruit of the spirit is peace. Um maybe if Jacob wants he can come here and do this while we're talking. So if he's listening then he can come and help us out. But we've been already going through a few of the Holy Spirit um fruits and the first one we went through was love as you guys remember. The second one we went through was joy. Joy. and how we talked about that joy was not connected with emotions. It was knowing that God is with you in your storms. Jacob, hi. Um, brother's helping me out. Um, I'm I'm not an IT guy, so please forgive me. Do we have something rolling? So like who remembers like a little bit about joy? What is joy? Do you guys remember what joy is? We talked about it a few weeks back. Okay. Right now it's [laughter] [clears throat] One, two. Okay, there we go. So, while you're thinking, maybe I'll add a question. Uh, what is the difference between happy and joy? They're very similar in a way. Well, that's one of there is a reason why it never ends. That's a very good question. So happy depends on the circumstances. I got something, I got happy. Someone gave me a big present, I got happy. I bought a new car, I got happy. A joy I may have when I lose something, when I lose my job, I can still have a joy because joy does not depends from the outside circumstances. It depends on my inner person. If I have bigger goals, if I understand that God have plans for my life, I'm joyful. If I understand that I inherit salvation, I'm a son of almighty king. I'm joyful regardless what happens in my life. That's why there is a big difference between being happy because happy is temporarily and like Mike you said joy is eternal. If only we hold on to Jesus Christ to God then we will have joy every time. And that's why joy is a it's not a gift. It's a fruit. It's something that I work towards. something that I bear and even maybe I don't want to be joyful but that's why it's a fruit I work towards that that's why it's very important to have the uh fruit of a spirit which is joy yeah and uh what we have to understand is that these fruits of the spirit are only in belief believers because an unbeliever will not possess any of these fruits because these are fruits of the Holy Spirit given to believers only. That's why when you look at this world, yeah, they'll they'll have happiness, but once things go left, then they're in panic. So, and again given, but at the same time, I want to kind reinforce. So the fruit of a spirit, it's the same fruits that in God's spirit, but now it's got to be in our spirit. It's a fruit that my spirit bears. So there is a difference between the gift of the spirit is just given. It's a gifts. You cannot work towards that. But the fruit that's something me and you have to work towards because the god spirit has as well. So that's why and and like pastor team said it cannot be in unbeliever because he's spiritually dead. So he might have resembles something of it but it's going to be the fruit of a soul. It's not going to be the fruit of a spirit. So when we became a believers now we can bear the fruits of the spirit and it's the same fruits like I said in a god spirit. So now we're moving on to peace and if if people have any comments or questions you guys are welcome to to raise your hand and speak. Uh Dimma maybe you can get a mic. Um and but [clears throat] the question is now what is this peace that the Holy Spirit possesses? Like what's peace, right? What's peace? And I just wanted to like for us to look at this picture for a few seconds and just kind of like analyze it and then we'll we'll move on and then we'll go back into it. And over here in John 14:27, if you guys have your Bibles, let's open up to John 14:27. We're going to be on that verse. So, if you have the page number, please share it with us. 1558. John 14:27, page 1558. The Bible's in the pews. And this is the the day before Jesus, he's going to go on the cross. He's going to be beaten. He's going to be crucified. And he's saying all these things that for for just a regular person, it will not make sense. like Lord, how how are you saying to have peace, to have joy, uh to be calm when you know the next day what you're going to go through? And in John 14:27, it says this, "Peace, peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives you, I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Let me read that again. Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. We got to look at these words. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. And that's the peace that our Lord Jesus gives. And how I put over here is that peace is not the absence of conflict. So a Christian since he is rooted in Christ, since he has the peace of Christ, his peace no longer is attached to anything around this world or anything around our life. that uh things could be happening and we could still be in peace, right? It is not attached to conflicts. It's not attached to materialism. It's attached to the Holy Spirit from above. So going back to this picture, we could see the the ocean waves and there's a storm coming, right? There's a storm and sometimes in our lives, we have the storms and if you are probably standing on the shore and you're seeing this, it will bring fear into you. Uh because you never know these these waves can uh crash over you. But then you look at this little bird over there sitting on a nest and just kind of weathering the storm. Weathering the storm. I took this picture u there was an author that that wrote a book. I didn't take this photo. Uh this is from Google. And it's not real as you can see. Um, but like this this author, he paints a picture with his mind of what true peace in Christ is. You can have the storms in your life, but because God is your peace, you can be calm in them. You can be calm. Did Did everybody get that idea from this photo? Yeah. Okay. I guess I'm not the only one that has the peace of Christ in me. No, I'm just joking. Okay. [clears throat] So, when we actually read further on in chapter 15 of John verses 1 and below, it says, "I am the true vine and my father is the vine dresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he takes away. And every branch that bears fruit, he prunes that it may bear more fruit. And like pastor Henry said that the fruits are not gifts. The gifts are prophecies, healing, wisdom. These are gifts given from God. When God gave Solomon wisdom, Solomon before that had no wisdom or he had some wisdom. But God gifted Solomon with wisdom. Whereas people from how wise Solomon is, it's a gift. But this is something we have to work towards. And in John 15 when Jesus before John 14 when Jesus talked about the joy, the peace and then in 15 he says that uh verse verse one and two I am the true vine and my father is the vine dresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he takes away. And every branch that bears fruit, he prunes that it may bear more fruit. So every believer, he's on the vine of Christ and it will and it's our job to bear that fruit. And then God again, you know, takes us into the desert of our life where we're like, "Lord, where are you? Where are you? Where are you? Lord, help me." And when we're always calling on him, that brings us closer to God. And then again God um I would say in a way he nourishes our life with more peace with more joy with more fruit. So like [snorts] uh previously been mentioned that Jesus Christ given us a peace. Yeah. But what kind peace? Well, right here in Romans uh 5:10, we read, "For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his son, much more now that we are reconciled shall we be saved by he by his life." So there was a time we were enemies towards God. There was no peace between us and God. We were in war and Jesus Christ came and died for you and me so that we be reconciled to God. When there's two sides in a conflict and we know the world peace treaties a lot of times let's say if the superpower is uh won the war against the regular power it places its demands on that other weaker side and usually that peace never stands. Why? because they were forced to take up on this peace. The peace only can be stand when two sides found that there was uh benefits for themsel and then that peace will stand but that's why you see the war wars will reoccur. So now when God gave us a peace actually God got nothing from us he did everything to reconcile us to him and now Jesus Christ left that peace to us but I do want to reinforce again but what that's something Jesus Christ gave us now when we that we should have the fruit of a peace that's something our side working towards God that's something I actually do and say God yeah maybe there is a war in my heart I struggle with something I'm in a difficult situation But I will bear that fruit. I will bear. And so that's something we start working towards to have the peace in our hearts because God did everything from his side and he actually shows us how to bear the fruit like uh pastor Tim just read when we are abiding on the wine when we actually feeding from Jesus Christ then we will be able to bear the fruits if If we are not abiding with our own strength, we will not be able to do that. So the most important lesson for us from what pastor Tim is read is to abide on Jesus Christ. Then we get those juices. We get the strength to bear that fruit. Otherwise we thinking, well, I know Jesus Christ. Why do I do not have the peace the fruit of peace in me? Well, it's because maybe we're not abiding in Jesus Christ. And it's simple. It is is that well, what's abiding? Yeah, it's to be in his word, to be in prayer, and to be in communion with each other. When we come, we encourage each other. That's how we stay strong. Then when someone is feel weak, we encourage. Amen. You got to abide in Jesus Christ and that's how we start bearing that fruit. And [clears throat] that that verse John 14:27 I wanted to talk about when Jesus says not as the world gives do I give to you. So he says, "My peace I give to you, but not as the world gives I give to you." So the world it gives its peace. But what kind of peace does the world give? And what kind of peace? Well, we already tal talked about the peace that Jesus gives. But what kind of peace does the world give? conditional. He hit it on the spot, but let's let's talk about it. What kind of conditional peace? Say that you're going through something hard in life. Uh you feel just from every sight like you got into an argument with somebody. Then you're driving down the road and your tire pops. Uh you get out of the car, you you open the trunk, you shut it on your hand. I mean like everything is crashing and burning in your life as you think. Or it could even go deeper like you lose your home, you lose your wife or your husband, you lose your friend. Um, [clears throat] it could even go that deeper. And so what kind of peace, what kind of conditional peace does the world offer us? Well, you guys can think about it. Yes, Vlad. Drugs and money. Drugs and money. What about uh sometimes like you hear or see like a person had a long day and he has no peace and where does he end up at night? In the bar. In the bar. And he drinks himself until morning and then he goes back home and all the problems still exist. And on top of that, he even maybe created more problems because him being drunk, he's driving home and he gets pulled over for DUI. Now he's in jail. And that's what kind of peace the world gives. Conditional peace that actually doesn't free you from your problem. And so Jesus says this is the peace that the world gives. But the peace that I give to you, it's deeper and it's greater. It's whenever that happens in your life, you will be calm. Not that you won't feel any pain, not that you won't be sorrowful that you just loved that you just lost your loved one. You will have those emotions. But once again, peace is not attached to emotions. It's attached to Jesus Christ and his and he wants to give us that peace. And the the definition in Greek, the the world peace is called irony. Ireny. And it's defined as calmness, tranquility. It said I didn't know what that word what that word tranquility was so I had to define it for myself. It's calmness and then peace with God how pastor Henry just explained and peace with others. So this is the peace that Jesus is talking about when he's saying the peace I give to you. calmness in your storm. Reunification with God. He is reuniting us with God and peace with others. Let's open up to um calmness. John 16:33 is just the next page for some. These things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. Look at that. In the world you will have tribulation. He didn't say that. Oh, in me you will have peace and I will take away all your tribulation. No, no, no, no, no. He's saying you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world. Meaning that knowing whatever you're going through in your life right now, if you abide in Christ, he will give you that peace and that hope that one day all these pains and sufferings, they will all go away because he has overcome the world. So be of good cheer knowing that your suffering is not forever. But those who are not those who did not believe in Christ, their suffering or is going to prolong even more. That's why he's saying be of good cheer. Be of good cheer because when you have me, your suffering will come to its end because I have overcome this world. But whoever does not believe in me has not overcome this world. And friends, this is this is a blessing for us who believed in Christ because our sufferings are temporary while unbelievers the sufferings are eternal. And that's the sad thing. So the the definition of the peace that Jesus gives the first one is calmness. A calm steady assurance. This is the the definition of it. A calm steady assurance in the soul that remains firm regardless of outward chaos or circumstances. like this, like this picture. And the second one was peace with God. And Pastor Henry already went through that. Our reunification with God the Father. And peace with God is also the wholeness being tied together into a complete sound state. Sometimes the people of this world, they will never understand why we feel why we're so calm. Sometimes they're like, "Don't you see what's happening around you? Don't you see?" And you're like, "Yeah, but God has it all under control." See, an unbeliever, he's in panic. He's panicking, but God has it under control. Anybody else wants to add to this before we move on with peace with others? And maybe somebody has a story. Maybe somebody has a story that you can share where like everything around you was burning down while you just had this assurance and peace that everything's going to be okay. Maybe somebody can share a story. And while we are opening up to Romans 14:19, I'll share a story. But it's funny because [clears throat] this was just recent. Uh all the food prices are going up and the gas is going up and everything is going up and there's this panic like the the stores are going to be empty. Uh like we need to go and and start buying everything out. But I just had this piece like everything's going to be okay. Everything's going to be okay. And it turns out that everything was okay because we're still here. We're still fed. I mean, I need to lose weight. Even I'm like I said, "Hey, listen. If if things go up and I start buying less food, that's good for me, you know, that's good for me. That will finally put me on a diet. But but that's the thing. While people are panicking because things seem to not be going their way, they're going to the store. They're buying this. They're buying that. They're doing this. They're doing that. But a person of God, he has peace. Everything's going to be okay. And when God's like, "Okay, son, daughter, go and prepare for yourself that that that you know, okay, I'm going to go and do it." Not because somebody told me, but because I feel it in my heart. And that's peace from God. Okay. And last one, peace with others. Romans 14:19. Romans 14:19. Okay, I'll be reading Romans 14:19. I didn't put the passage here. Okay. It says, "Therefore, let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify one another. Therefore, let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. Over here, Apostle Paul like he's writing that let's pursue the things of peace pretty much. Let's be peacemakers. And in Matthew 5 when we read the the the sermon on the mount, Jesus says, "Blessed are the peacemakers. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." So it turns out that those who make peace, not conflict, not war, those are the true believers of Christ. So when you see somebody that's been going to church for 30 years and all they do is just conflict, all they do is just war with one another, that's a sign that that person is not abiding in Christ. But when like we can check ourselves today, are we the ones bringing conflict into our surroundings or are we the ones bringing peace? Like, hey, [snorts] let's not talk about this or you know, it's whatever. Let's just move on. Like, move on with your life. Are we the peacemakers or are we the ones did you hear? Oh, that guy and then or that girl. Did you did you see what she did? And then we're trying to destroy other people's reputations, other people's images. When Jesus says, "If you are truly sons of God, you will bring peace into your surroundings." Pastor Henry is quiet today. I feel like I'm the one talking. [laughter] I mean, I just want to reinforce again. So, the last passage you said if we are the peacemakers. So the peacemaker again it's the fruit of a spirit. Now that's something we have to do in order to spread the peace. This is a decision that we make. Are we actually going to be involved in spreading maybe some kind lies, maybe some kind bad news, maybe some kind quarreling? Or we decide that I'm going to be a peacemaker. I'm going to bear that fruit. And if everyone try to because there is like they said there is no news that it's a good news. It's got to be something bad. And sometimes we want to involve in it as well to spread the bad news because that's what mostly people want to hear. But let's decide that we're going to be the one that going to carry the good news. We're going to carry the peace to other people and we're going to tell them about the peace. This is a conscious decision that me and you can make. Well, our uh discussion has come to the end and any final thoughts before we do a final prayer. So, if somebody here this morning feels that you don't have peace in your heart, Jesus offers that Jesus offers that fruit to you today. and and he wants to abide in you and he wants you to abide in him so he can bless you with these fruits. Let's pray. Let's stand up and pray. [clears throat] Lord God, we thank you for this time, God, that we could discuss about the the fruit of peace, Lord God, and that we could learn about it, Lord. God, I pray, Lord Jesus, if there's somebody here this morning that that feels like they're just living on their own, that they're that they're trying to do things on their own, Lord God, may they turn their heart to you, Lord God, because you are the the the one who gives the peace into our lives, Lord. May you give each person peace, Lord God. and like in our lives right now or in the future, Lord, whenever we're going to be going through the storms, let us be calm and have assurance in you, God, that you have everything under control, Lord. Bless our congregation. Bless everybody who was here this morning and watching us online. Bless each person in Jesus' name. Amen. And for our la for our last song, we'll be singing Thank you for the cross, Lord. Thank you [music] for the cross, [singing] Lord. Thank you [music] for the price [singing] you paid. Uh we're going to be cancelling our service for that week, which is June 14th. Um a lot of the people and our youth and I'm going to be gone. We're going to go visit another church in Washington. So, the 9:00 a.m. service on June 14th will be cancelled. Uh, but the 11:00 a.m. service will still be here. I just won't be able to pick anybody up. Um, that that's that. Also, we did a lot of cleaning yesterday in the gym, uh, preparing for the move there in a few months. So, thank you everybody for coming out and helping. It was a true blessing. There was a lot of work and we got it all done. Just a few minor things we need to do and uh it will be clean. So, praise God for that. Also, there was a person that asked to be prayed for. His name is Henry and he lost his father and he's in just deep pain right now. Let's pray for Henry because uh this is a big loss but I know that God he can comfort, he can give the joy and the peace and usually those fruits are really needed when a person is going through something like this. Um so we're going to pray for that. Does anybody have any thankfulnesses to the Lord or any needs? If not, let's pray. Lord God, we thank you for this time that we could come here, God, and learn about your word, Lord Jesus. I just pray, God, that we uh abide in you, God, and grow in your peace, Lord God. Holy Spirit, help us to to grow in this peace, Lord God, in the joy and the love, God, that you that you give, Lord Jesus, God, when we abide in you. and just give each one of us, Lord, strength to abide in you, to not make any excuses, Lord God, but to pick up the word of God and to meditate, to read it, Lord God, to to to uh pray over it, Lord God, and to have a connection with you, Lord. God, we also pray for uh Brother Henry, Lord God. He's going through a lot this morning, Lord. And we just ask for your peace to come in him, Lord. And may your joy come in him, Lord. and you God and calm him down God. Calm him down Lord knowing that this is not forever Lord God and may you enter into his heart Lord God that he can make you his Lord and Savior Lord. May your name be praised and glorified in Jesus name. Amen. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sinned against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For your kingdom, your power, and glory forever are yours. Amen. Be blessed.
