God when we're discouraged when we when we're lacking in faith or we're doubting or we're just frustrated or we're disorganized or all these things Lord God but Lord we thank you for what you do each and every day you're in our heart in our minds and we thank you for guiding us we thank you in uh Jesus precious and wonderful name amen first of all I just want to say good evening to everybody but it's so good to be back in your presence it's just always so much fun to be here and U opportunity to share the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ among friends and family here and tonight's message that I want to share with you is called the power and consequences of speaking life so if you have your Bibles with you this morning on your phones or or this evening your phones or um your regular Bibles uh we're going to be quite a bit in Proverbs tonight so uh when I was thinking and praying about what to share this evening with you guys and um two major things kind of came to me of um how and why I'm going to share this message and first of all as a as a pastor and as a counselor um and working with individuals and families and uh married couples over the years there's an interesting thing that I find um in working with families and and and people I spend a lot of time helping people in various ways but the biggest ways I think um communication is where things often times you know break down between people where we get a little bit confused or misunderstanding misunderstanding or a perception you know well hi Hannah I didn't realize you were there um anyway so and it's mostly due to ways that we converse with each other and a lot of times that can be problematic because in a manner that does not really honor the Lord have any of you ever done that communicate that way yeah I think we do because we're sinful creatures right so our negative attitudes a lot of times and Al also toxic words that we speak are not only damaging but they have long lasting effects so a lot of times when I'm working with people uh in counseling they've been like that you know for a long period of time so you try to take that apart and help them work through the process of stopping that right and all of us have to work on that so I began to realize also the other part of this is that many times I say something negative or disp respectful to other people so this message was really starting to hit me very hard I was thinking about oh I'm that person I'm that person do I ever gossip or do I ever do those things you can ask my lovely wife here tonight who's with me so yeah it's true so I mean things that we may say to a family member to you know the church member and especially uh I've caught myself saying things about you know people that might disagree with me you know people that you know certain personalities or um politicians or people like that that I can get upset with you know I've had to really check myself and say you know that's probably not a good plan so tonight I will start this message in the Book of Proverbs and I will be going over several scripture references so if you uh would turn to Proverbs 18 through uh 18:21 to start out and then I'm going to reference other scriptures as we as we move along through the message tonight uh I like what this writer says concerning this particular subject that we're dealing with tonight it says many Christians have never considered the incredible impact their words can have on other people God created us to be expressive beings in the the Bible tells us that our words hold the power of life and death that's Proverbs 18:21 so it says death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat of its fruit now encouragement often comes through spoken words but also when you think about it so does discouragement so you got encouragement on one side and discouragement on the other and Reckless words they pierce like a sword and this is Proverbs 128 and how good is a timely word and this is Proverbs 15:23 so if to speak life is to be a person of encouragement and there's sometimes we don't feel like that you know especially if we're discouraged or we're depressed or we're feeling anxiety those kinds of things it's hard to be a person of encouragement but you not only want to be a person of encouragement edification and blessing to others through the words that you say so let's take a look at other scriptures from Proverbs to consider and their meaning in beginning this conversation this evening so if we look at Proverbs 1011 it says the mouth of the righteous is a Fountain of Life okay this is going to be interactive a little bit who are the Righteous I know nobody nobody wants to answer that right it's you you're righteous right why are you righteous you may not feel righteous oops you're in Christ that's right Christ makes us righteous so isn't that good news well good okay now um one of the things too is that um I like what this writer says he says um um where am I here got lost here Proverbs 12:18 um which says there is one whose rash words are like like sword thrusts but the tongue of the wise brings healing well that's a heavy one so much in Proverbs so much here from a guy Solomon talk about him all night now the Bible Likens rash words to sword thrust okay that's pretty rough so that's not scratching the surface you know better be careful up here sword thrusts right pretty tough stuff so it goes deep into a person's inner being so are hurtful and rash words when we speak those things so and it's interesting about being offended because a lot of times we get offended by people's words by people's actions have you ever been offended by something you find out what you were offended by wasn't even the truth that's the worst right I know he said that or I know she said that you find out no it wasn't even close but you were it all day long you know and you were upset with an individual so Proverbs 15:23 says this says to make an apt answer is a joy to a man and a word in season how good it is so Solomon we know is the primary writer of Proverbs and is and the Book of Proverbs what we call it's an example of the wisdom books and you can hear it you can see it here uh and it writes once again about the value of well chosen words so he observes that an appropriate answer Delights both the hearer and the speaker so the emphasis here is on Words which are especially well timed they're well fitted to the moment at hand okay so not only is it joyful for the person who can give such an answer to someone it's a blessing to the one who hears those words for that to happen the speaker needs to do what according to Proverbs we want to pursue wisdom you know and how we respond to people and how we do that so the ideal response would be a word of encouragement explanation it could be praise it could be love it could be even believe it or not it could be an exhortation it can be a rebuke but it's how we deliver those words and this is where my during my study for this topic I began to realize the seriousness of this as I was reading through this I'm going oh this is all about me this is not good news right now as I'm reading God's word I'm going I'm really messing this up and I've got to really work on this as a pastor you know thinking get up your game a bit and get a little better you fall into things sometimes you fall into patterns and you're not realizing that you're doing some of these things now there's an author named Gordon McDonald I like what he um what happened to him and that's a large part of our message tonight uh what he went through as a pastor and it really resounded with me and I and it tells how a rebuke from a friend it saved him from thousands of times over messing up and that is hurting others and making a fool of himself these are his words he said he was in Japan and he was on this speaking to her to talk about the Lord you know he was a pastor preacher guy uh and he was with his close friend and uh they uh and he know he's known this guy forever and he the his friend was a lot older than him and his they were walking down this street in Yokohama Japan and the name of one of their mutual friends came up and they started having this conversation well Gordon he does this he said something very unkind about the person and it was sarcastic and it was cynical and it was a total put down on this guy guess what the other guy did here's what he did he stopped him immediately put his face right in front of Gordon's he said these words Gordon a man who says he loves God would not say a thing like that about a friend right so here's Gordon he was already a pretty popular well-known guy around around the world actually he's kind of like stunned and he's like well you can't say that to me and kind of thinking about what just happened and he said it felt like his friend put a knife in his ribs and he said and the pain would not have been any less but Gordon wrote later here's what he said but you know something there have been 10,000 times in the last 20 years that I've been saved from making a jerk of myself when I've been tempted to say something unkind about a brother or sister he recalled that one sentence and he recalls it time and time again I'll say it again Gordon a man who says he loves God would not speak in such a way about a friend and it made such an impact on him that he went yeah how am I a guy preaching the word of God and doing these things and yet I'm breaking a pretty big rule of scripture you know and how I'm responding and how I'm talking about others so if you think about what happened to Gordon um you know in the relationship with that person he spoke ill of and those unkind words what if it had made it back to that person right that guy would have been devastated you know and really upset by him saying such a thing about him so what I'm going to say to you guys which I've said to myself through this message time and time again already have someone else's comments hurt you or you know and considering your own experiment experience how have you been guilty of speaking hurtful words to somebody else right this is something for all of us to really think about you don't you know I mean there's so many things to preach about isn't there I mean you got a lifetime of God's word here but this is one of the ones that I've seen churches separate over is somebody and I'm experiencing it right now with some conversations in my own church where somebody blurted out a bunch of stuff and so people got hurt and what does the bible tell us to do man I'm just gonna behave um what does the bible tell us about what we should do next if we offend our brother or sister you can speak up what is it repent as Henry said what' you guys say repent and there's another RW reconcile there it is who said it Melody were you listening to me that's it repent and reconcile who wants to do that it takes some work and we've tried to work with these gentlemen and I'll never get it right here we go um we've tried to work with these guys so like let's do the right thing let's do what Jesus tells us to do no you know they're just all up and the guys left I don't even know they're going to come back and it wasn't that big a deal but how big is that in the church that separates us over these things where we don't have that repent and Reconciliation at times so let us not be desensitized is the big word here uh and careless about the words we speak especially this one the emotion of anger that's the one that gets us in trouble more anything else is Boom hitting that anger button um and then we said say things we wish we hadn't have said right it's too late so Apostle James what did he say he put two things together that are powerful for all of us and that is slow to speak and slow to wrath how well do we do that James 1:19 and scripture has a lot to say about power of the words in James 1 I mean James 3 1-12 it's it's a nice little section there contains one of the best summaries we can find in how to deal with this kind of stuff so this is Gordon McDonald had kind of had to really work through this uh after this experience with his friend in Japan and so he kind of put these different thoughts together that I wanted to share with you tonight but he said this he started out by saying the more words we speak the greater the likelihood that some of them will be regrettable does that make sense yeah sometimes we just talk a little too much say a little too much but it happens okay you guys have that first slide back there anywhere is there anybody back there okay there was there was the first slide if there's somebody there maybe not okay um but the first thing is accountability okay and James warns the teachers to be careful oh gosh I remember reading this time and time again about the teachers okay and it says maybe they didn't get it you guys so may not maybe not have gotten the slide um but I remember when I first got into Ministry years ago and thinking hey look at that um the being a teacher and I really thought oh why would I want to be a teacher why would I want to teach anything when you read that and goes I'm big- time accountable here and because it's here's what it says um that they that God will judge them more strictly right so in my mind back there young in Christ I'm thinking maybe I'll just be in the worship band right I could be a drummer in the worship band I don't have to speak I don't teach anybody anything there's Alternatives but God put me in teaching but that doesn't mean everyone else gets a free pass right aren't we all kind of teachers of the word if we're disciples if we live out what Jesus told us in Matthew as far as go out and disciple and take the good news to the world if what happened in the in the second chapter of Acts that we're supposed to go out and represent right and do what we do in bringing people to the Lord so we all are in that category some are a little have deeper in it than others so Jesus said this we would be held accountable for Every Idle Word we speak Matthew 12:36 that's a heavy one how do you not have an Idle Word how many Idle Words do I have during the day right that I have to go back and think about it's nice to be under the blood of Jesus in all of this you guys there were're not feeling a constant sense of guilt but that we are aware okay so this includes words we speak without thinking and gossip most casual thoughtless words can sometimes cause the most harm Proverbs 10:19 says this he who restrains his lips is wise because in the multitude of words sin is not lacking so one way to put it is let's do the math okay the more words we speak the greater likelihood that some of them will be regrettable basically is what's being said here now the third thing uh is disproportionality and that's a big word um to express a simple idea the size of the tongue or the size size of a few simple words stands in stark contrast to the size of the trouble cause so if you look back at James 3 3-6 in the same way and you guys are familiar with the story I know you know how I know this about you guys how do you think I know this about you guys any clue I've known you just long enough and I've talked to you guys over here and you guys over here and I know how much you know the word of God I'm very satisfied and impressed with that it's really touched me just knowing the youth in this church and how dedicated you guys are of the word and living out your lives for Christ I didn't expect this tonight but it's uh it really has impacted me in a very very powerful way so I do know that about you so in the same way a small bit gu a horse and a little tiny Rudder right can turn a whole ship around James puts it right there right that nasty tongue gets us in so much trouble that little thing on our body sometimes you think God can you make me mute you know I'd find some other way to get the word out so or mess up right so so how often do we hear this kind of a thing or reports about a politician they've had this wonderful night telling all kinds of awesome things and they they're caught off guard by what we call a hot mic you know where they think all the mics are turned off and they're over here telling this terrible thing or saying something awful and it really reduces them right so their whole light is lost because I've said all these other things happens all the time can it happen in church we better be careful of a hot bike right so so anyway a few unguarded words you know unravel all the good you know accomplished in a situation like that the next one is wildness and if we imagine our tongue is like an animal now this is this isn't like uh what are the little things uh Melody that our kids love so much our grandkids the little what do you call them little stuffies little yeah little stuffies it's not a stuffy okay this is a real thing so we should not picture the pets that greet us when we come in the house right but these are bad things this is more like a saber-tooth tiger which we can't find anymore but uh or ravenous wolf if you look at James 37-8 Humanity has succeeded in taming some of the wildest creatures on Earth but we have miserably failed when it comes to taming our speech now it was interesting uh after church last Sunday we took our grandkids over to the circus and very interesting uh circus life is kind of funny uh but it's amazing the animals they had elephants they had camels they had all these Critters doing all these amazing things in the psych world we call that operate conditioning where you condition an animal to do something unusual right so they had these um elephants you know sitting down and doing all these these crazy things and and uh the most amazing part of the show was when people came out riding buffalos anybody ever seen that one it was my first yeah it was my first they're writing a buffalo the saddle so that was interesting but so what James is saying here even back in those days if you think about it what they did in the Coliseum what the Romans were doing they had all these trained acts they had trained animals and we know the results of what happened to Christians because of that so he was really trying to form a picture in our Minds that that the tongue is powerful the tongue can really get us in big trouble so for evidence I submit to you that every time you have thought I wish I'd never said that guys ever been there did you do it today hopefully not okay so anyway I lost my little page here next one is consistency and that is not only can our words injure those around us but they can also harm our witness and that's a powerful thing our witness for the Lord can be tainted by this and remember what he was saying uh his friend had said to him a man who says he loves God would not say a thing like that about a friend so for a Christian to speak in an ungodly way is inconsistent and it's hypocritical you know we find ourselves in doing that and James says that blessing and cursing should not come from the same mouth any more than salt water and fresh water can come from the same spring James 3 9-12 and our our words also reflect something very powerful it reflects our heart and our heart condition and our relationship to Jesus so in John 13:35 Jesus Says by this all will know that you are my disciples if you do what if you what love one another Tim got it Tim was paying attention yeah if you love one another right each time we open our mouth to speak we have the power to bless others as representatives of Jesus Christ but if we are not careful what do we do we may sin by insulting someone God has made in his own image right we're all image bearers we may not do it very well sometimes but we got to be careful our words reflect our heart and relationship to Jesus last thing on this one is protecting the tongue there's only one way to protect your tongue and it's really protecting your heart Proverbs 4:23 Calls the Heart the Wells Spring of life and According To Jesus the things that defile us spring from our heart we find this in Mark 7223 so we can basically polish our appearance you know all we want but eventually our heart is going to be in a place that's going to reveal our true character and that was the problem with the Pharisees and Jesus really brought this out in front he said they looked holy on the outside right they had these awesome costumes you think about it you know they kind of paraded around the town and always looked incredible in all the all the regalia but Jesus described them this way he said your whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness you think they liked hearing those words you think they were offended that was not a good day for the Pharisees says the mouth speaks what the heart gives it to say so if you are tempted especially in emotional or angry moments and I have I'm speaking to myself you guys on this as well things that I try to help other people with in in in just counseling or doing Pastor stuff is to sometimes you got to take a break back I mean you got to walk back a little bit take a deep breath and not let it out sometimes that's not easy if somebody really pushes you and makes you upset and you say things that you will regret so anyway I like this is one way to do this is to create a prayer based on scripture this is from uh Psalms 19 and Psalm 139 this says this may the words of my mouth and meditation of my heart be pleasing to you oh Lord my rock and my redeemer search me oh God and know my heart test me and know my anxious thoughts point out anything in me that offends you and lead me along the path of everlasting life amen that's a good prayer for all of us our words say a lot about us and they have the power to really shape our future so once again Proverbs I'm going to go back to Proverbs 18:21 again it reminds us the tongue can bring death or life those who love to talk will reap the consequences so choose them carefully and then choose them consistently so let your words bear testimony to the grace and the peace that is ours in Jesus Christ and Jesus is the best example of someone whose whose answers and words brought these things Jesus brought joy into those received him his words brought also these things they brought life they brought Comfort they brought hope and what's interesting even the officers of the chief priests uh who were all you know riled up about Jesus they said these words they said they admitted this they said no one ever spoke like this man so they knew this is what you find in John 7:46 our answers and our words too should bring joy to those who ask for a reason for our hope and we find this in 1 Peter 3:15 it says but in your hearts honor Christ the lord as as holy always bring being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you so let your testimony be strong about that yet here's the here's the interesting very end of this piece that is powerful yet do it with gentleness and respect so we oftentimes use this particular scripture from first Peter as what we call an apologetic in other words be be ready you know to give an answer what you believe but sometimes we may take it to a place of debate especially debating with somebody who's a non-believer and so I'm telling you how it is you know what is the word telling us here it's telling us do it with gentleness and respect so that they walk away you know not just having a debate with you but walking away that guy that woman that person they they really loved me they were really appreciative of who I was even though I was totally just uh disagreeing with their position so we need to share this with others so they may have an opportunity to know the joy of the Salvation that we have and going back to Proverbs 18 again now this time we're going to look at 20 and 21 okay we're going to look at them together so from the fruit of their mouth a person's stomach is filled with a harvest of their lips they are satisfied the tongue has the power of life and death and those who love it will eat its fruit so this passage figuratively is talking about referring to the words as the fruit of the mouth and then in other parts of scripture might say the fruit of the lips and you'll see that in Proverbs 12:14 and 13:22 so the Harvest of our words can either bring the benefits of life or the detriments of Destruction and death so in verse 21 what we're seeing here is those who love it the tongue refers to people who talk excessively sometimes talking too much maybe too much talk may lead to sin what was that my phone I think it was my directions to get here well that was interesting sh okay um too much talk leads to sin Proverbs 9 10:19 says and these people will suffer the consequences of what they say so those who purpose to Speak Life understands that the words we speak they do have consequences so when a when a witness uh testifies um in court and I used to have to spend a lot of years in court um his or her words may decide whether a defendant lives or dies right uh and that could happen our words can affect the emotional and spiritual health of someone we really do care about we ought to think carefully before we speak because our words can destroy a lot of things it can destroy a marriage it can destroy um various relationships in a family friendships churches Ministries and are we building up the lives of our children our spouses and other loved ones with the words or are we tearing them down are we inspiring people with hope or crushing their Spirits Proverbs 15:14 I mean 15:4 says the soothing tongue is a tree of life but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit now the Apostle Paul he cautions us to speak only words that will benefit others and you guys know the life of Paul I mean thinking where he came from you know as a as a killer of Christians to a very radicalized life way on the other side so he was very familiar with a lot of this stuff as the Holy Spirit spoke to him through him to write these words he says here he says do not let any UNH wholesome talk come out of your mouths but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs that it may benefit those who listen and this is from Ephesians 4:29 so to speak life what does it mean it means to give words of Hope to give words of encouragement edification support and love and we should let our conversation be always full of grace seasoned with salt so that you may know how to answer everyone we read this in Colossians 4:6 this is where you're speaking life now there's a guy named Dr Greg SMY been around a long time uh and he gives um five ways to speak into someone speak words of Praise I think there's another slide there for that one um speak words of praise words of gratitude words of validation words of Honor and words of encouragement so when someone says through words or actions something like this somebody that's having a difficult day somebody here in the church a friend or somebody it says I feel worthless I don't even know why God made me no one cares I hate my life we have golden opportunity to speak life into that person now here's the other part that how about when you've said these words to yourself and you're having a difficult day things aren't going so well this is also an opportunity for you to speak life to yourself right even if you don't mean it sometimes emotionally you're going I don't feel like this is really how I feel is this other side over here I'm hating my life I'm hating how things are going okay I'm GNA speak truth back into my life now I was going to tell you at this point that I brought a book that um I often use with people who are struggling in this area and left it on my desk so but I'll give you the name of the book it's been a very helpful book it's been around a lot of years um and it's tactics that this uh Pastor started many years ago it's based on what we call misbelief therapy and it's backed with scripture and it's written by Dr William bachus and his friend uh Marie chapion uh and it's really a good book and it's the name of the book is telling yourself the truth and what Dr bacus did for years as a family therapist and uh Pastor counselor was helping people get back into the word to speak the truth into their lives when you're having these days like when you're saying these things about yourself um or other people to go back into the word and speak what Jesus said you know back to because man speak that word right into here because that's where belief and Faith are you know in that part in our heart so it's it's very good if you're interested I can get get you that information so in closing tonight you guys I want to say that all of us can follow the example of Our Savior Jesus and we can do these things we can proclaim the good news to the poor we can proclaim the Liberty to the captives we can rehab the recovery of sight of the Blind and freedom to the oppressed we find these words in Luke 4:18 and we can speak life and hope to our spouses our families our siblings um our friends and church members and to the world Amen all right well I'm going to close in prayer here where you guys are have a closing prayer too right father God amen we'll be singing the last song Love Lifted Me [Music] and we'll also be having our [Music] tithe I was Sinking Deep in sin far from the peaceful Shore very deeply stay within seeking to rise no more but the master of the sea heard my despairing cry from the waters Lifted Me Now safe am I Love Lifted Me Love lifted me when nothing else could help Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me when nothing else could help Love Lifted Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me When and nothing else stood out Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me when nothing else could help Love Lifted Me souls in danger look above Jesus completely saves he will lift You by his love out of the angry ways he is the master of the sea below will oy he your savior wants to be be Sav today Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me when nothing else could have Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me when nothing else could help Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me when nothing else could help Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me Love Lifted Me when nothing else could [Music] help lifted me thank you worship group such a beautiful sing yeah I think we all have enjoyed yeah and um brother my this was a I would say very essential message that you gave us today uh just be careful when you're asking for slides each time they cannot find the slide they just put coffee break slide over there they did that to me a few times so just but anyway so um we all need to be reminded of this of the message um again and again and you know uh like one man said God gave us two years in one mouth and guess why so we can I guess listen twice more than speak but as we heard today death and life are in the power of tongue and and this is just not an empty words this was said by the wise men and the man of God and so and it's true so that's why we're going to pray so God can give us a strength to use our tongue to build each other up because otherwise we can destroy each other so let us take this message and take into our heart so um today I do want to announce that uh maybe we'll have 10-minute break after the service and then I would like Youth and maybe people who responsible for the nightly service to meet at the youth room over there uh because we might have some changes but um I know that on Tuesday we're going to have a a church council meeting and so therefore I do want to talk to youth as well prior to that so we'll have maybe 10 minute time to talk to each other and have a fellowship and then we'll meet at the a youth room so we will pray for brother team as we see he uh when he plays soccer he plays it really seriously that we see the outcome but that's how he takes everything in his life and Service as well thanks for that yes so we pray so God would heal his meniscus or whatever is damaged over there yeah so we'll pray for you brother team um so do we um is anyone have any needs that we want to pray for if not let's stand up and let's pray actually Lord we we thanking you for this message that you gave us through brother Mike we need to be more Vigilant what we say and how we use our tongue and at some point we all at fault but that's why you remind us again and again how to use our tongue to build each other up and not to destroy thank you for this message and thank you for brother Mike because we really enjoy this message in the name of Jesus Christ amen Our Father which is in heaven Hallowed be your name thy
